Whispered interpreting services (Chuchotage)
What?
A more common form of simultaneous interpreting is whispering (or chuchotage – yes, we sometimes borrow words from French
). It does not require any kind of special equipment, and the interpreter stays close to the listener and whispers the interpretation of what the speaker is saying. The interpreter has a very difficult task, as he or she has to listen and interpret at the same time, but also needs to ignore (as much a possible) other distracting noises. If there are more than a few listeners, the interpreting can be done using microphone (for the interpreter) and headsets (for the listeners).
Where?
Whispered interpreting services are suitable for small conferences, where there are one or two speakers of a different language that need interpreting, guided plant tours etc.
Characteristics:
Advantages:
- No time is lost (the interpreting takes place at the same time as the speech)
- No need for special equipment
- Usually one interpreter is enough
Disadvantages:
- The interpreter may get easily distracted by the noise around him/her or their whispering may distract the others
