Consecutive interpreting services
What?
Consecutive interpreting services involve the interpreter listening to the speaker delivering his/her speech or parts of it and then interprets it to the listener(s). Depending on the length of the speech, the interpreter may take notes or rely on his/her memory (if only one or two sentences are delivered at a time).
A consecutive interpreter needs to have acquired a number of skills for him or her to be able to deliver quality consecutive interpreting services. First of all, is a perfect grasp of the source language and target language. Secondly, note-taking skills. Each interpreter will develop their own system. Taking notes is essential when the interpreter delivers the interpretation of the speech at the end of it (be it after five, ten or twenty minutes). If the interpreter is required to translate one or two sentences at a time (during a dialogue for example), then they will rely on their memory. They can still take notes, obviously, especially to jot down any names, dates etc.The only drawback of this type of interpreting is the fact that it basically doubles the time of the event. Consecutive interpreting services can be used if there are only tow languages used/needed during the event: the source language and the target language. If more languages are needed, maybe you are looking for simultaneous interpreting services, which are suitable for multilingual conferences.
